Jack McCoy showed clips of his upcoming film at Mollusk in Venice last night and "EPIC" is probably the best word to describe it. Not in the trite "dude it was epic..." sort of way but in the true sense of the word. The film has a majestic grandness and soulful quality about it that only Jack with his 35 years plus of surf film making experience can deliver. A couple of months away yet but make sure to cop it when it comes out.

Sessions at Mollusk....

Mollusk has been having these cool little open jam seshes on the 2nd Thursday of every month, full of improvisational jams and sit ins from some fantastic players round town. Towards the end of last Thursday evening's jam, guitar man Blake Mills (ex Simon Dawes) sat down with his Les Paul and quietly began riffing, which he tastefully transitioned into Vic Chesnutt's "Where Were You". Moments later Jeff Litz got on the kit, I happen to have my video camera in my backpack and captured the very rad impromptu moment... shaky camera included (Tecates...).

Even in its raw spontaneous form with mistakes and all, it was a great rendition of the song for certain. Blake is the real deal kids. Respect to Chad Marshall for putting it all together.

Checked out “Searching for Michael Peterson” last night in Venice. Cool flick delving into the troubled life of the Aussie surfing legend. The surf footage of vintage “MP” was the film’s highlight for me, he seemed to have an innate ability to literally be a part of the wave as he surfed. It was incredible to watch especially projected on a big screen.

Overall a cool flick to check out, showing the “frailties of life” within the context of the surfing lifestyle. Jolyon Hoff has done a great job combining candid interviews, vintage footage, and a cool mood setting soundtrack to tell his story. He’s taking the film up to Santa Barbara for a showing tonight at the Victoria and back down to Long Beach at Shelter tomorrow evening.

Go see it.

Sad to hear the news of Shawn Mortensen's passing.

I had been out of touch with Shawn and was reminiscing with a good friend today about my fondest memory of him from back in the glory days of "pre main stream" Hip Hop around 93'-ish. I was called in by Tupac Shakur to see about directing a video for him so he wanted to meet me at a recording studio in Atwater Village. I was new to the video directing game and super nervous about meeting with him as I had heard so many stories about his intense personality both on and off camera. So there I was in the studio lounge area waiting and nervous as hell and in walks Shawn.

He was commissioned to take some photos of Tupac but his camera gear was acting funny. From what I remember I think his camera body or flash unit was jacked up.

Just like me, he was also super nervous about making a good first impression on Tupac, but how was he gonna do that with gear that wasn't working properly? So now we had a pressing situation in our hands, after all he was supposed to be photographing perhaps the most promising and potentially relevant rap artist of the generation (according to the music press at that time).

So I tell him that I could make a call to a photographer friend who was close by to see if he had another body or unit and he agrees...but just when I was about to make the call, one of Tupac's boys comes out of the studio and tells me that "Pac was ready to see me now..." SHIT! As I stood up Shawn gave me that, "dude what am I gonna do?" look. So I tell him we'll call after the meeting. He says cool then gives me a good luck thumbs up...

After the meeting I'm stoked to come out and find that Shawn is in a better mood and that he had gotten his gear working properly. He asks me how my meeting went and I said I think it went well.

But unfortunately, I would end up not getting that gig (until the "Hail Mary" video which I directed after Tupac's death a few years later). Shawn had better luck however with his first shoot with Tupac and would go on to photograph the now famous and iconic VIBE MAGAZINE cover of Tupac in the straight jacket. He would also go on to make his mark on the arts and advertising worlds as well.

Shawn will be missed.

Gonna be gone for a bit, a month to be exact. My wife & kids and I are going on a MUCH NEEDED holiday in an undisclosed island vacance...Will try to update if we come across anything dope, otherwise I leave you with a picture I shot of a girl I saw shredding St. Barbara skate park, crazy classic stylin' like, bare feet and all. Wish I had some video cuz she had a sort of fluid and smooth surf style, seamlessly connecting bowl after bowl. Her fluid skating juxtaposed nicely with the sounds of crashing boards and the failed radical-ness which seemed to be going on all around her. Girl had steez and those foster grants....

Sad to learn of the passing of another great American photographer last Saturday. William Claxton was at the forefront of putting a decidedly "west coast" thumbprint on the jazz scene from the early 50's and beyond..."cool" and laid back west coast as opposed to "hot" and frenzied east coast. The dude would go on to inspire other photogs, filmmakers, fashion editors, art directors, etc. forever.

Saw OG Zephyr HO checking out the surf atop mythical Bicknell hill one morning and he told me about how back in the POP daze they would stash their surfboards underneath the bushes and low lying trees for weeks on end around the gazebo there. The boards were freely used by their crew and when they were done surfin' they would stash it underneath the trees again for whoever may need it. "No problems man there would always be a board or two that we could count on being there..." he said.

Wow, must have been nice, can you imagine trying that today?

I had the time of my life on those mellow rollers that seemed to go on and on and on....Put into that mix hangin' with some friendly local heads, meeting the Moonlight Glassing family, watching M Caro shaping a fine looking stubbie, a couple of tasty Pedro's tacos, and talking story with a good friend in his brand new ride...it was a great day of California surfing stoke. Checked out the new surf flick, Tales From The Black Van at Mollusk Venice last Saturday night. It was good to see some fresh logging footage, and the flick's lo-fi B&W vibe was a nice break from the recent batch of "shot in Super 16mm"glossy film looks. As always the Mollusk surf shop contingent and the shop itself set a great vibe and ambience, Brett is running a fine establishment. After the screening the crowd was treated to a set by The Japanese Motors led by Alex Knost who was just as engaging to watch sliding down faces as he was fronting his band, here are some video grabs.

It was good at 1st yesterday, SUPER GOOD...Shot some stills and some 16mm (which I hope to post soon). I swear there was one set that seemed to go on forever, wave after wave of "boo" goodness. It was just perfect. I spent the entire day there then hung out with some friends and had some cold brews at the pier watching the nice sets roll in. After nearly getting thrown out of the place thanks to a paranoid restaurant manager who was stressing Carl, we split and headed back to the sand where the sets continued to roll in, still super good. It was just perfect...even got to hang with that guy who played "Slade" on Baywatch for a bit.

I went to the premier of SURFWISE last night at the Egyptian in Hollywood

and hooked up with my good friend Abraham Paskowitz of perhaps the most well known

family in the surfing world. The film was great, a definite must see for the great archival Paskowitz family surf footage of California, Mex, Hawaii and even Israel as well as a great look into the surfing lifestyle taken to the extreme.

Last fall. Was hanging out with Klotz&Marshall downtown
and we came across this guy singing his heart out
on the street. We hooked him up with some ends
and he sang us some songs in return. While listening
to him, you realize how many different shades the
blues come in. Not seen him in a while, hope he's
doin' alright.

Planks & Jack

Been busy with an interim gig, but I managed
to skip out to meet with the legendary surf
flick master Jack McCoy and WOR Trace last week.
Jack was a true gentleman freely giving me tips and
advice on the plusses and minuses of some of
the new gear that's come out recently.

STONER at MOLLUSK in VENICE

Met up with some friends at Mollusk last Saturday nite
to check out the Stoner Show. The place was packed
even for an on again off again rain soaked evening.
Stoner's photographs were even more amazing in
printed form. The area where they were displayed
was packed with admirers seemingly at all times
and it was difficult to snap pics in there, perhaps I'll shoot
some during the day for a later post. For now here are
some pics of the crowd.

At the risk of sounding cliche', there was a great vibe
in the air, a real "free and easy" affair (so 60's Venice right?).
There were smiles, laughter amidst inspired photographs
and art, beautiful surfboards, master shapers, hero surfers,
artists, fans of surf culture, even the guy (or girl) who burned you
at first point a few weeks back...
All in all, good times.

16mm film test

Pulled out my 16mm camera last summer and
shot a couple of test rolls at first point.
We did a one light minimal color correction telecine
on it and this is what we got. There is nothing
quiet like shooting with real film, just wish
it was more cost effective than shooting with
video. The footage is uncut & completely raw apart
from the Allman Bros. Melissa track and split screen.
There are some some familiar sliders ( and quiet a few falls & dug rails..).
A little sunshine and warm water for a gloomy and
rainy Southern California Wednesday.
